This Thursday features two lectures by exciting academics. The first, by anthropologist Bianca Williams (CUNY), is entitled “#HappinessIsPolitical: Black women, diasporic heart, and the journey of emotional wellness.” (see poster below for more information).

Later that afternoon, musicologist Tammy Kernodle (Miami University) will present a lecture: “‘Before I’d be a Slave’: Black Women Composers and the Promotion of Resistance Narratives in the Cold-war Era Concert Hall.” Dr. Kernodle’s talk will take place in NSL 404, Eastman. Welcome!

Welcome to “Approaches to Musical Ethnography” (ETH 480)! This WordPress site will serve as the digital home for our course. It will allow you to connect with each other outside of class and find support as you delve into the challenges and rewards of ethnographic musical research.

Under “Reading Responses,” you’ll find the relevant readings; you’ll also post your responses here. “Research Reflections” allows you to post thoughts, queries, and rants about your ethnographic research as it proceeds. (And in order to get started, you’ll need to log in at the bottom.)

I’m excited to work with you all this semester – take it away!
